From the (I kid you not) Cardinal Ratzinger Fan website:
The truth is that as Ratzinger mentions himself in Milestones: Memoirs: 1927 - 1977, he and his brother George were both enrolled in the Hitler Youth (at a time when membership was compulsory), and discusses family life under the Third Reich in chapters 2-4 of his autobiography.

And Sister Jeannine Gramick, a nun who he (Ratzinger) ordered to stop ministering to gays and lesbians in the United States, called his election "devastating" for those who believe the Catholic Church needs to be more tolerant.

My ass....

"called his election "devastating" for those who believe..."

How could it possibly be "devastating" when the Protestant Reformation happened over 500 years ago?

As head of the powerful Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Ratzinger disciplined dissidents, backed John Paul in resisting reforms sought by liberals and urged caution in pursuing relations with other Christian denominations.

While all formal religions are flawed and only as meaningful as those who administer them and participate in them, I think a larger issue is being forgotten here: The positive effect most religions have on society. When society, in general, looks down on religion, social problems increase at a pace accordingly. Just look at history. All revolutions and violent social upheavals have involved a renunciation of established religion and social order falls apart.
